SWIM Project Summary
In 2007, PEERS Victoria was awarded a three year project grant to develop a provincially coordinated network and system of focused interventions to address the FASD crises in BC’s sexually exploited youth/sex workers.
Our Objective
To coordinate, develop and implement a provincial strategy for organizations that work with sex workers within seven communities with the focus being on FASD.
The communities are:
• Victoria
• Vancouver
• Nanaimo
• Campbell River
• Kamloops
• Kelowna
• Prince George
Year 1: Research, Information exchange and planning
- Identifying leaders and champions in all sectors and at all levels
- Compile data and lists within the seven communities from FASD and sex work organizations
- Organize meetings in communities to identify coordinator, mentor and advisory board members
Year 2: Community SWAT and Action Plan
- Training and implementing curriculum on addictions and FASD initiatives for agencies, communities as well as post-secondary institutes
- SWAT
- Family Conferencing group
- Mom’s mentoring moms
- Family group collaborative homes
Year 3: Capacity Building and Final Report
- Developing a final report derived from the joint knowledge and resources of the seven communities
- Developing portfolio of each community that includes current initiatives that address the issue
- Continuum of knowledge, dialogue and collaboration within the communities
